On the recent anniversary of Guruji Mr BKS Iyengar’s death his daughter Geeta announced a new school would be opened in his home town and birthplace in Bellur in Bangalore, India.

Iyengar’s first institute is in Pune, India. Mayuri Phadnis in the Pune Mirror reports: “The foundation stone of the building had already been laid in the yoga guru's presence in May last year. The institute in Bellur will be completed by the end of this year.”

Iyengar was committed to giving back to his home town. He built a primary school in 1967 for children up to grade seven. In 2005 he opened a girls’ school. A yoga hall was built to run classes for the students and neighbouring villagers.

Now the hall will be expanded into an institute that trains yoga teachers along with classes for locals as well as internationals.

Geeta says Guruji’s spirit lives on in his students and vows to “keep his Sadhana (legacy) alive”. “He has imparted knowledge open-heartedly, which we continue to spread,” she says.
