Griffins Hill News Let's talk about #metooyoga
Sexual harassment and exploitation go hand and hand with power, even in the global community of yoga practitioners, sadly. We applaud the brave women who have come forward in a variety of forums to speak honestly about their experiences of sexual harassment and physical abuse by yoga teachers over the past decade, most recently under the hashtag #metooyoga.
As disappointing as it is to discover such painful stories of abuse at the very heart of the global yoga community, we are heartened that yoga magazines and bloggers have been unflinching in writing about the issues. First came the reports of scandals with Bikram Choudrey and John Friend, founders of the Bikram and Anusara Yoga schools respectively. Then blogger and yoga teacher, Rachel Brathen (yoga_girl) bravely published many accounts of sexual exploitation in December 2017. We also read Karen Rain's testimony of repeated sexual assault by the founder of Ashtanga yoga, Patthabi Jois, and accusations of physical and sexual abuse against the Buddhist leader, Sogyal Rinpoche.
What this tells us at Griffins Hill Yoga Retreat is that the global yoga community wants to get to the truth, and to change. Let's do it.
