Becoming an Iyengar yoga teacher

The first and most important prerequisite in the process of becoming a yoga teacher is a commitment to a regular and sustained yoga practice. Once we develop a deep understanding of asana and pranayama firstly through practice and class attendance and secondly through a mentorship with a qualified Iyengar teacher in a teacher training programme or apprenticeship that we can think of becoming a teacher

“‘The teacher should be clear, clever, confident, challenging, cautious, constructive, courageous, comprehending, creative, completely devoted and dedicated to knowing the subject, considerate, conscientious, critical, committed, cheerful, chaste and calm.’

B.K.S. Iyengar

The Griffins Hill teacher training and development program will be conducted over two years. After which the trainees, having completed all the required hours will qualify to sit the first level of Iyengar certification.

The prerequisite to obtaining certification is that students must have been practising Iyengar yoga for a minimum of the three years before commencing teacher training and must complete 300 hours of yoga teacher training with a teacher accredited by the BKSIYAA to train teachers and 100 hours of class assisting and observation.

Students must also complete a minimum of 36 hours of Anotomy and Physiology approved by Griffins Hill Yoga Teacher Training. We can arrange for a 2 weekend course (separate from the teacher training hours) with guest teacher at an additional cost around $750-$850 per peron.
